Background

More than 2 million Canadians and 1 in 5 Ontarians are informal caregivers. They provide approximately 80% of the care needs for people with chronic health issues and contribute an estimated $25 billion in economic value. If we are to sustain our publicly funded healthcare system, we need to spotlight the challenges caregivers face.
Join national and local experts to ask how we can best support informal caregivers.

• What are the trends in informal caregiving in Canada and abroad?
• What has worked well in supporting informal caregivers? What hasn’t? What are some key lessons?
• What are the evidence-based best practices for frontline staff working with informal caregivers from diverse backgrounds?
• What would a comprehensive caregiver strategy look like that meets the needs of informal
caregivers, those they care for and that will also help sustain the health system?

It’s time to turn private challenges into public policy issues.

Margaret Federico [MFA], Novelist, Columnist and Informal Caregiver (Halifax, Nova Scotia), Margaret will share her experiences as an informal caregiver and draw from her extensive literary background, mixing humour with real life caregiving.
