Supportive Housing: The Winning Formula for Supporting People and Sustaining the Health Care System~ October 15, 2007
A full-day symposium presented by the Canadian Research Network for Care in the Community (CRNCC) and the Ontario Community Support Association (OCSA)
This symposium focused on the crucial role that supportive housing plays in maintaining the health, well-being, independence and quality of life of individuals. There is mounting credible evidence to suggest that when home and community care is targeted, managed and integrated within the broader continuum of care, there are positive outcomes for individuals and the health care system. This symposium highlighted supportive housing as the site of integrated care within the continuum of care.
Key symposium themes included:
- The current state of supportive housing in Canada; what is already working – the varying shapes, sizes and models of supportive housing and the range of supportive housing options for different needs groups (including people with mental disabilities);
- How supportive housing is good for individuals;
- How supportive housing fits into the broader health system contributing to the sustainability of the health system;
- Opportunities and challenges for translating knowledge into practice at both policy making and service delivery levels – How do areas that do not have supportive housing make it happen and move good ideas to action?
This symposium was intended for policy makers, academics, clinicians, researchers, managers, and frontline workers in the field of supportive housing and home and community care.

CRNCC / RCRSC is an international network of researchers, providers, citizen groups, community organizations, consumers and policy makers. Its goal is to share knowledge and research evidence about the crucial role of community support services within the broader continuum of health and social care. CRNCC / RCRSC is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and Ryerson University.

The Ontario Community Support Association (OCSA)
The Ontario Community Support Association (OCSA) supports, promotes and represents the common goals of its members. They provide not-for-profit health and social services that help people live at home in their own communities, across Ontario.
OCSA represents more than 360 community agencies, 25,000 staff and 100,000 volunteers across Ontario. Last year these volunteers donated over 2.5 million hours of service. OCSA works with their members to ensure that issues which affect community services are heard and addressed by government policy makers, other health organizations, the media and the general public.
